As I approach my 72nd birthday, I’ve come to yet another contemplative crossroads. I’ve had many mini-careers since my first part-time job behind the counter in Sloan’s, Athlone at fourteen including painter, civil servant, clerical officer, market stall holder, a musicians only night club founder, a mature student, radio station manager etc etc.
MUSIC ASSOCIATION:
I’ve been a music fan since I was five, a writer since I was fourteen, a performer since I was seventeen, a friend of Irish music “stars” since I was eighteen, a recorder/collector of LIVE performances at forty, a promoter at forty two, a broadcaster at forty three, a published poet at forty four, a website founder/ maintainer at forty eight, a frontman for The Launch Crew at fifty, a debut CD at fifty six, a regular festival act to present day .
PROMOTION:
From 2001- 2014, I staged hundreds of on The verge (oTv) presents nights at venues which were willing to pay expenses + drinks vouchers and that meant I could promote and record acts with original material for my radio shows and the embryonic website.
Since retiring from Dublin South FM in 2016 to concentrate on personal projects, I have continued bilingual webcasts, at least twice a week, with a strong leaning towards Irish works. After producing hundreds of shows of all genres, my latest and final series, VERGEMERGE is using material from all those archived broadcasts as an educational non-profit facility (copyright compliant) Meanwhile the source material on minidisks and cassette tapes is still being digitised and stored. (a long, long way to go !!)
NOW FOR THE DIRECTION SHIFT:
My use of social media platforms will be restricted to notices concerning new bulletins on the website www.ontheverge.ie. I will continue to use linked in for work related activity however.
By the 24th of August (birthday 72) I hope to be communicating solely with people who are interested in supporting my various adventures, rather than my breath and time wasting on an apathetic social media population .
Twenty four years ago when I founded the website, I started the oTv Club which offered, for a NOMINAL yearly fee, reduced/free admission access to on The verge production events and EXCLUSIVE recording downloads PLUS a supporter’s chance to play at an event or have one's material broadcast on air. It had a limited membership of 100, which was administratively manageable.
I may rewind to that era. I don’t use Patreon, gofundme or the like and prefer to offer LIVE entertainment for donations towards the cause. (+ CDs, exclusive music poetry downloads, images et al.)
I’m a retired pensioner after all
Let me know if you’re interested in an old school oTv Club by email: info@ontheverge.ie
Finally, as a performance poet, I have never had the need or expectation of acclaim of any kind, especially in my pragmatically viewed poetry lifetime :).
Having received plaudits and encouragement, for my work and performances, for over half a century, from people whom I, (and probably you) respect and admire, has sufficed.
Déanfaidh sé sin domsa
